Research at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria has taken a HUGE positive turn and we are so excited to share that with you! What is even more exciting is that money raised from the Mark Linder Walk for the Mind is credited for making this research advancement possible!! See the update below and help us celebrate the news!

“Promising developments with UICOMP research are moving to next phase.”

A research team at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria has identified 30 small molecule compounds that hold promise as potential options in the treatment of solid tumor cancer. The team will complete patent applications for the compounds and will start the next phase of their research as the findings in the laboratory prepare for the next phase of research which is pre-clinical trials.

The work is led by UICOMP Assistant Professor Kiran Velpula, PhD, and Associate Professor Andrew Tsung, MD, who serves as Interim Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Patrick Elwood MD Endowed Professor in Neurosurgery.

The molecular neuro-oncology laboratory at UICOMP has worked more than a decade with a focus on tumor metabolism, molecular biology, signal transduction and cancer biology. Much of the work of the research team has focused on glioblastoma, the most common brain tumor in adults. Recent research has aimed to identify novel therapeutic avenues and develop small molecule inhibitors for the devastating tumors, specifically looking at tumor metabolism, progression and growth.
The research laboratory at UICOMP works closely with the Illinois Neurological Institute and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria).

Mark Linder Walk for the Mind continues to be instrumental in bringing individuals together to create a network of support for one another. Many of our survivors continue to SHARE experiences in dealing with their own brain tumors.
